It is official: I am leaving Germany to move to South Africa. 4 days ago Julia and I moved into our first own flat here in Cape Town and everything feels so amazing and new: I honestly have to pinch myself to realize that this is not a dream. But why Cape Town? What am I going to do here? How long will I stay? It is about time for a life update blogpost.
If you have been following me for some time, you probably already know that I fell in love with Cape Town. This love affair started when I first visited in January 2015 and it is still going strong. This place just has something magical about it- maybe it was the breathtaking scenery, the chilled vibe, the cool people or beautiful beaches, but it turned out to be my favorite travel destination.
After graduating from school in March 2014 I was uncertain of what I wanted to study at University, so I took a gap year to travel and try to figure things out, which has now turned into 2.5 years of me seeing the world and starting my blog (read about my crazy journey here).
Anyway, after seeing so many amazing places, settling down in Munich to study just didn’t feel right. Having spoken to a lot of people who go to the University of Cape Town, I thought to myself- why not study in one of my favorite cities?
The application process literally took me 3 minutes and I also got a confirmation quite quickly. I still remember when I was in Bali and opened the acceptance email- everything felt unreal and my excitement was hard to put into words.
Uni here only starts in February, so Julia and I have plenty of time to settle in and enjoy the summer in Cape Town before commencing our studies.
We are both going to do a Bachelor of Arts, which is a pretty general undergrad course. It works as follows: you pick 4 subjects and after the first year you choose the 2 subjects that you want to focus/major in. For the next two years you can then choose 2 new subjects each year. Since I am interested in a lot of topics, I guess this will be a good option for me.
To be honest, right now I still feel a little overwhelmed since last last week (which was packed with furniture shopping, organizational stuff etc.) was rather hectic and now Julia and I are sitting in our empty apartment (we only have our beds) and are slowly starting to take everything in.
I have no clue where this road is going to lead me and where I will end up. All I know is that I am very excited for what’s to come.
