Are you going to lose weight, workout more often or stop eating fast food? What are your New Year’s resolutions this year? I used to think that New Year’s resolutions are silly and nothing but a waste of time (read about it here). However, this year I have changed my mind. I want 2018 to be the best year of my life so far and I think that in order for major improvement to happen in your life you also need to be willing to implement changes. Here are my New Year’s resolutions for 2018:
Like pretty much everyone, I gossip. I talk about other people with my friends and oftentimes this will happen in a rather negative tone. To be honest, sometimes it is nice to just let out how you feel about a person.
After reading the book The Four Agreements (which I can highly recommend) I have changed my mind about gossiping since the author suggests: “Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”
Being someone who gossips relatively frequently, this resolution will probably be the hardest. I hope that by stopping the negative chatter about others, I will reduce my focus on the unwanted things in life and instead focus on positivity and creating a life I love. After all, what we put our focus on determines our view on life and the experiences we create (read about it here).
“Surround yourself with people who talk about visions and ideas. Not people.”
Learn something new
When was the last time you learnt something new? As a kid I constantly did: from learning how to play the guitar to tennis lessons over to painting classes, I always explored new hobbies and interests. Somehow now I completely stopped doing that. Any creative classes like art or music, appear non-productive and if I want to move my body I just head to the gym.
This year I want to change that. I want to challenge myself and learn something new. I want to start learning a language, take part in a dance class or acquire a new skill.
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something”
– Neil Gaiman
“When was the last time you did something for the first time?”
Step out of my comfort zone
Funnily enough, in 2015 I wrote a blogpost about stepping out of your comfort zone after my first trip to Cape Town: “The best things in life happen when you step outside your comfort zone. During my stay in Cape Town, I have found so much truth in that saying. Whether it was moving into an apartment with two complete strangers or dancing half-naked in front of the camera for a bikini commercial casting- those things felt really uncomfortable at first but after I did them I was damn proud of myself.” (read the full post here)
Over the last months, I found myself buying into the false illusion of happiness and security that comfort brings and I forgot about the growth and fulfilment that stepping out of your comfort zone offers.
This year I want to step out of my comfort zone as much as possible: meet new people, take up opportunities that come my way, do things that scare me, think differently and jump into new situations no matter how uncomfortable they may appear.
“If you do the same things, with the same people, you will have the same year. Step out of your comfort zone.”
“Always go with the choice that scares you the most, because that’s the one that is going to help you grow.”
These are my New Year’s resolutions for 2018 and I will try to stick to them to the best of my ability. Hopefully, in a few months time I will be able to report to you on my progress.
Have you guys made any resolutions for the new year?
